Abstract
This thesis explores the impact of music on human experiences. Taking a particular look at composer Olivier Messiaen, it delves into the traumatic effects of World War II, and personal loss during his life. This thesis seeks to share the healing capabilities of music and how composers were able to utilize music as a way to cope and process their experienced trauma. It compares music history and art history, developing research in the field of music therapy, and the interconnectedness of sound all around us. Looking closely at the life of Messiaen you find the essential role his faith played in the development of his compositions and how despite the horrors of war, his love of music and the Lord were unfailing.
